David Paul Black is a spiritual expressionist artist based deep in the Heart of Texas.
A painter of cowboys, horses, and horizons — he is a visionary depicting scenes of a mythical Wild West.
Born and raised under the vast bluebonnet skies of South Texas, his art is rooted in the quiet grace of ranch life. Through bold brushstrokes and glowing color, he transforms familiar south-western imagery into surreal, soulful visions where memory and imagination dance beneath the sun and the stars.
Working primarily in oil as his medium, David paints from the heart rather than from sight. He channels his reverence for the land of Texas, its animals, and the spirit of solitude. His art is both a prayer and a promise: to honor the natural world and do his best to steward and protect the heart of Texas.
His personal and artistic mission is to donate proceeds from his work to land conservation in the American Southwest, specifically the rescue of wild horses and preservation of the chaparral habitat, extending his art’s compassion into action.
His connection to the sacred land began in childhood, studying cowboys fixing barbed wire fences under a burning hot sky on his Mexican grandfather’s cattle ranch in San Diego, Texas. David grew up listening to his family’s tall tales of old Texas and drifting to sleep beside old black-and-white westerns flickering on TV. These echoes of the past and the rich Texan traditions of respect and family values still ride through his imagination. They serve as reminders of a timeless wisdom rooted in faith and connection to the wild country, and of the beauty that endures when one lives close to the earth.
