David Black is an innovative artist known for illustrating Cowboys & Horses with a contemporary, surrealist vision.
Born and raised in South Texas, his paintings are inspired by ranch life, wide open spaces, serenity and solitude. His style combines modernist elements with expressionistic brush strokes. Capturing all of the color spectrum to illuminate his cowboys on canvas. He uses primarily oil paint and his own imagination to improvise his subject matters and sunsets.
He grew up going to ranches in the middle of nowhere; under the hot Texas sun. Seeing the wildlife amongst brush and open plains, awoken deep senses within. Smelling the scent of the cows and horses; studying the hard working cowboys create a barb wire fence. This way of life left a strong impression on his memory & became apart of his own creative expression later in life.
There is a romanticized vision of the American West. Understanding there is wisdom from the old cowboy days that can be applied to todays world. Nostalgia and memories linger in David’s art studio. He recalls his grandparents telling him stories from old Texas books. The vintage black and white westerns they would let run on TV. These stories and characters inspire the motifs and ideas in his paintings.
David is inspired by many artists that came before him, seeing their original works in museums is how he learned about art and its rich history. He insists on mentioning his favorite inspirations.
